Getting a Second Opinion

Options to Improve Knowledge and Treatment

Patients may choose to seek a “second opinion” to receive counsel from another doctor regarding their illness or course of treatment. Toranomon Hospital is pleased to share medical data and cooperate with doctors at other facilities per patient request.

In addition, our doctors will cooperate to provide a second opinion for patients of other facilities.

Caution

A doctor’s counsel reflects what they personally believe is best course of action. However, some patients find it beneficial to hear the opinion of a doctor with another point-of-view and compare different possible treatment methods before making a choice.

Toranomon Hospital has a positive view of second opinions, in addition to clear explanations and informed consent, as a means to improve each patient’s access to their ideal medical treatment.

Getting a Second Opinion From Another Facility or Doctor

Please ask your current doctor directly, or consult with the outpatient reception of the relevant department.

Our doctors will provide an information file regarding your case. Please note that it may take time to assemble the necessary materials including medical history, exam notes, video data CD-Rs and/or lab specimens. A processing fee (health insurance co-pay) is required. Please note that it is not possible to assemble a complete information file for some medical cases.

Getting a Second Opinion From Toranomon Hospital

1. About Second Opinions

Our doctors may declare their interpretation of a medical case based on the recommendation letter and information file provided by the patient’s current care provider.
No additional exams or tests will be performed. The consulting doctor at Toranomon Hospital will send their evaluation in writing to the other facility directly. Patients are asked to remain with their current care provider.
If the patient wishes to follow up on the results of the second opinion with an exam at Toranomon Hospital, they may visit the outpatient clinic with a recommendation letter from their current doctor.

The presence of the patient is required by general guidelines, but if unavoidable circumstances prevent the patient from visiting in person, a family member may come in for consultation on their behalf. In such cases, proof of power of attorney is required.
